Vecka 50

To be nobody but yourself in a world that's doing its best to make you somebody else, is to fight the hardest battle you are ever going to fight. Never stop fighting.

EE Cummings

Emma Watson is a British actress, model, and activist, most widely known for her portrayal of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series. In 2014 Watson became a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and helped launch the campaign HeForShe. Watson presented a speech at the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York.

As you listen, take notes on why Emma Watson believes the roles of men are important in ending gender inequality.

Emma Watson -

Gender equality - (more equal, less stereotypes, less demands on how one should look/behave)

  1. How old was Emma when her female friends started dropping out of their sports? Why did they do it?

  2. How old was Emma when her male friends were unable to express how they felt?

  3. Has any country in the world achieved gender equality?

  4. In her speech Emma Watson said that men are also stuck in the male stereotypes. What does she mean? Can you give examples from this film?
"If we stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by what we are—we can all be freer" What do you think Emma W means by this?

The Perks of being a Wallflower

After being hospitalized for the summer after his best friend commits suicide, Charlie who suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), is about to start his first year of high school somewhere in the US.
He fears being known as the weird kid who was hospitalized for the summer and not having any friends.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower champions and celebrates inclusivity and tolerance by showing both how people can blossom when they are accepted for who they are and how painful life can be for people who are ignored or mistreated.

What is a "wallflower"?
What are the pros/cons with being a wallflower?

There are many life lessons in this story. Could you name at least one?

Would you be friends with Charlie? Why/Why not?

Stephen Chbosky said he wanted to make a story in which none of the characters was a bad person. Was he successful?

Why do really great people let themselves be treated badly?

During the following weeks we will be reading the novel Girl missing by Sophie McKenzie.

You will practise: reading- listening comprehension, writing and speaking + get some cultural knowledge.

As an introduction to the novel, please look closely at the first page of the following internet site

This means that if you take the number of people living in the whole of the district of Leksand you have to multiply it by over 50  to get the number of children missing EVERY YEAR in the world!

Here is a short clip as an introduction to Girl Missing

What if everything you thought you knew about your life was a lie?

Lauren is adopted and eager to know more about her mysterious past. But when she discovers she may have been snatched from her family as a baby, her whole life suddenly feels like a sham. Why will no one answer her questions? How can she find her biological parents? And could her adoptive parents really have been responsible for kidnapping her? Running away from her family to seek out the truth, Lauren's journey takes her deeper and deeper into danger as she realises that someone wants to stop her uncovering what really happened when she was a baby... at any cost...

A nail-biting YA thriller. Girl Missing has sold over 150,000 copies in the UK alone.
